Hamilton Heights Academy is a public elementary school that opened in fall 2002 with a kindergarten class and a plan to develop into a small community school with interested and involved parents, excellent caring teachers, and a diverse community of children. The academy currently has kindergarten, first and second grades and will grow by one grade each year, with 2 classes per grade, from kindergarten through 5th grade. Housed in classroom space within PS 28 on 155th Street between Amsterdam and St. Nicholas Avenues, Hamilton Heights Academy grew out of the desire of a group of West Harlem parents to create a public school that was intimate and nurturing, academically rigorous, community-based and modeled on some of the most successful alternative public schools in the city.
