The Hispanic Society of America provides a free reference library for the study of the arts and cultures of Spain, Portugal and Latin America.

In addition to rare books, the Society maintains a research library on the literature, fine arts, geography, history, and cultures of Spain, Portugal, Latin America and the Philippines.

The Washington Heights Branch of The New York Public Library, a four-story brick structure, was designed by Carrere and Hastings. The first Washington Heights Library opened in 1868. In 1914, the library moved to its present quarters at 1000 St. Nicholas Avenue.

The facility houses an adult, young adult, children's, and reference collection. Children's programs include a Picture Book Hour and a Story Hour. Live Homework Help is available from 2PM until branch closing using the library's computers.

Hamilton Grange Branch

Designed by the famous architectural firm of McKim, Mead and White in the style of an Italian palazzo, the Hamilton Grange Branch was opened in 1907. Today it houses a variety of collections that serve an ethnically diverse community. The branch is fully accessible to persons who use wheelchairs.

Hamilton Grange offers programs for adults, teenagers, and children and provides Lifelong Learning materials for new adult readers. Children's programs include story hours, picture book hours and films for preschool children; magic shows, puppet shows and other special events for children and teens and craft workshops for teenagers.
